Commentary for Colleague’s Editorial

Hello Estrella,

I really enjoyed reading your editorial. I agree with you, we are slowly killing our home. The ones that are most affected are the animals. If everyone puts the effort into saving the earth, then we will be able to save our home and the animals will not lose their home as well.  Everybody loves to talk about how climate change is happening but not many love to do something about it. Like you stated, everybody should fight global climate change.

I hope that over the next few years we can all contribute to saving our earth and help all the animals stay in their homes.

Why DACA Should Not Be Removed

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) has helped many immigrants, like myself, who came to the United States at a very young age, it gave us the opportunity to be able to get a stable job by giving us a work permit and continue pursuing our dreams. At age 5, I migrated from Mexico to Texas and since then it has been the only home I know. DACA should remain and they should let the Dreamers keep working, finish school and let them achieve their goals, at the end of the day, we are humans and deserve to make our dreams come true.
DACA allows immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, completed or are in high school, and who have not committed a crime, to obtain work permits and have temporary protection from deportation. Every two years you need to renew it, which includes a fee of $495. As of now, they are not accepting no more new applications but those who were already under DACA can renew. The U.S. is the only country that these Dreamers know and established their lives here, and if DACA is removed they have to go back to a country that they barely know. When they apply for DACA, they do a background check to make sure you have not committed any felonies. I do not see why they do not want to keep it if every person who is under DACA contributes to the U.S.
In Conclusion, DACA has helped many immigrants have a better job and continue to pursue their dreams. If they take away DACA many of them are not going to be able to finish school and/or work in their dream job.

Commentary for Colleague’s Editorial

Hello Victor, I really love the topic you choose to do an editorial on, and I agree with both the reasons you stated why DACA should not be taken away. You included great arguments on why DACA should not be removed

Like you, I am one of the 800,000 DACA recipients. when I found out that Trump wants to end this program, it broke my heart into pieces. I’ve been in the US since I was five years old, and knowing that all my dad's hard work can be thrown away like nothing makes me really sad. Like you said, DACA recipients cannot apply for FAFSA, therefore most of us pay college out of pocket. In my case, I work and go to school to pay for my classes, it's hard but knowing what the outcome will be it makes me work harder.  But if DACA is removed I will not be able to make my dreams come true and will not be able to help my family. The reason our parents brought us to the US was to have a “better” life than them and without DACA we won’t be able to. DACA is not given out for free, as Victor mentioned, to be able to renew its $495 every two years. I really hope that every Dreamer gets to have the life they deserved.

Why Planned Parenthood Should Not Shut Down

Trump has recently put a new administration rule that forbids referrals to doctors who can perform abortions like Planned Parenthood. Places like Planned Parenthood has provided more than 1.5 million low-income women each year with services like birth control and pregnancy tests. Places like Planned Parenthood should not be closed down because there are many women who do not have much money to go to clinics and get the services they need. Abortion is not the only service that Planned Parenthood has, it helps women get screenings for sexually transmitted diseases and breast and cervical cancer. In a NY Times article, Pam Belluck states that the restriction would force physicians and clinics to withhold information from patients. It will also deny the rage of options that are available for pregnant women. As a protest, Planned Parenthood and some other organizations that received Title X funds stooped using the money until legal challenges were resolved. If Planned Parenthood shuts down teenage girls will not have many options on where to go and get birth control, pregnancy test or screenings.
Although I would never get an abortion, I do respect every women’s decision. For example, if women get raped and end up getting pregnant from it, that woman would most likely not want the keep the baby because it will remind her where it came from, therefore every woman should be able to have all the options that are necessary. Like I stated before organizations like Planned parenthood offers more than just abortions. If they go down nobody will help low-income women and around 2.4 million patients will lose access to care.

Will Impeaching Trump Succeed?

On October 5th, 2019, David Edward Burke published a commentary in Monthly Washington, a media organization that focuses on explaining how the government can be improved. In the commentary “Can Impeachment Succeed?”, David explains how Trump has violated the Constitution and should be impeached.
David provides some examples of how Trump has violated the Constitution. He states that Trump asked a “foreign official to investigate a political opponent”, which he is not able to because it is “previously identified as grounds for impeachment.” David also argues that many of the people that voted for him are going against him but David should have included how many people actually are against him. David stated that even if he gets impeached, he can become the first president to run for re-election after being impeached and that even then there’s “no evidence that it will deter his supporters.” I believe that the real question we should be asking is how many people will still support him in the 2020 election. He will most likely not get impeached just as David stated but if more people stop supporting him, then he will most likely not be re-elected in the 2020 election
This article is intended for all the citizens to inform them how Trump has violated the Constitution and if impeaching him is going to succeed. David does support his argument by including how Trump's campaign clearly states who he is as a person which is not good things.
In conclusion, there are so many reasons why Trump should be impeached but it will most likely not happen until something worse happens or until people stop supporting him. If every citizen does their research before voting then this country would be more in peace like it should be. We as citizens need to come together and make this country better again.

Housing For Homeless

On Friday, October 4th, 2019, the Los Angeles Times  published an editorial titled " Editorial: Here's one thing we don't need to fight homelessness: A state of emergency declaration." The editorial explains how local officials should do a better job of providing housing and shelters to the homeless.

The author does provide some arguments on why they should take more action in providing housing. the author argued that the city of Los Angeles did provide "$1.2 billion for housing for homeless and very low-income people through Proposition HHH, and more than 8,000 new units should be available in the next several years." But as the author stated, homelessness keeps increasing by sidewalks, riverbeds, and parks. The author argues that by declaring a state of emergency on homelessness is not a solution anymore, instead, the local officials should take action on helping the homeless. The author of this article should’ve provided information on how many homeless have health problems and are not able to get any help or have a home.
This article is intended for all citizens to explain how the government is helping the homeless and persuade them to believe that local officials should take action in helping the homeless. The author does support his argument by stating that the Trump administration has “turned down a request from Newsom for more housing vouchers for homeless people.”
In conclusion, there should be action on helping homeless people because at the end of the day everyone has rights. If the local officials take action in helping the homeless, it will minimize their health problems and help them have a home.

Combat Climate Change

On Friday, September 20th, 2019, the Washing Post published an article titled ‘We will make them hear us’: Millions of youths around the world strike for action, who was written by Sarah Kaplan, Lauren Lumpkin, and Brady Dennis. The article explains how young people skipped class to make the government do something about climate changes. The article explains the things we need to do to save our planet.
All over the world a lot of young people decided to make the government understand that they need to do something to save our planet. Yes, everybody knows that we humans are killing the planet but the government needs to help us save the planet. In the article, it says that countries should promise to “vowing to reach net-zero by 2050, cutting fossil fuel subsidies and easing the construction of coal-fired power plants.” The only way that countries can promise to do those things is if by the government enforcing it.
Everyone should read this article because saving our planet should matter to everybody in the world. Saving our planet will let our kids live their future in much more peace. This planet is the place where we are able to live, therefore our only option is saving our planet.
