Why Planned Parenthood Should Not Shut Down

Trump has recently put a new administration rule that forbids referrals to doctors who can perform abortions like Planned Parenthood. Places like Planned Parenthood has provided more than 1.5 million low-income women each year with services like birth control and pregnancy tests. Places like Planned Parenthood should not be closed down because there are many women who do not have much money to go to clinics and get the services they need. Abortion is not the only service that Planned Parenthood has, it helps women get screenings for sexually transmitted diseases and breast and cervical cancer. In a NY Times article, Pam Belluck states that the restriction would force physicians and clinics to withhold information from patients. It will also deny the rage of options that are available for pregnant women. As a protest, Planned Parenthood and some other organizations that received Title X funds stooped using the money until legal challenges were resolved. If Planned Parenthood shuts down teenage girls will not have many options on where to go and get birth control, pregnancy test or screenings.
Although I would never get an abortion, I do respect every women’s decision. For example, if women get raped and end up getting pregnant from it, that woman would most likely not want the keep the baby because it will remind her where it came from, therefore every woman should be able to have all the options that are necessary. Like I stated before organizations like Planned parenthood offers more than just abortions. If they go down nobody will help low-income women and around 2.4 million patients will lose access to care.

  1. I appreciated your article about this issue. I agree with your commentary on the issue of abortion and the President's approach to it. Like you said, it would only end up doing more harm than good. And as you pointed out, the scope of Planned Parenthood's services reach far beyond abortion. I think it's also good to point out that studies have shown in states where abortion services are restricted, you see a rise in illegal and dangerous abortions. This puts the patients at risk and doesn't change the fact that if someone wants to get an abortion they're going to get one.

  3. I agree about Planned Parenthood staying in business, they provide many assistance throughout the country for many women. The services they provide ranges from screenings to birth control, they allow low income women to get access to services they would most likely not have the chance to receive without Planned Parenthood. People only focus on the fact that they do perform abortions, but never take into consideration of how they got put into a situation to decide whether they want complete the abortion or not. Planned Parenthood deserves to stick around and provide the help that they do without being threatened of their funding, it is unfair and could cause more harm.
